Why (Find Your Why)

Definition

“Why” refers to the underlying reason behind actions, decisions, and existence. It expresses purpose in its most essential form.

In a business context, the “why” explains why a company does what it does beyond making money. It connects work with meaning, guides decisions, and shapes culture. As Simon Sinek popularized, people are drawn not just to what you do, but to why you do it.

The “why” is purpose made explicit.

Significance

The idea of “why” is simple, but not easy. Many companies can describe what they do and how they do it. Far fewer can clearly articulate why it matters.

This is because “why” is not a slogan. It cannot be fabricated in a workshop and expected to hold. A convincing “why” emerges from alignment between values, purpose, and real-world action. If it is not lived, it is not believable.

At the same time, the “why” is not always obvious from the beginning. Especially in business, it often becomes clear through experience. Companies start with a business opportunity, an idea for a product or service, and only over time understand the deeper role they play and the value they create.

When the “why” is clear, everything becomes easier. Decisions align, communication becomes consistent, and the right people are naturally attracted. It acts as a filter and a source of motivation at the same time.

Without a clear “why,” organizations tend to drift.
With it, they move with direction and meaning.

The “why” is not what you claim.
It is what consistently drives your actions.
