Readiness

Definition

Readiness is the state in which a person or system is prepared to engage, change, or act effectively. It reflects alignment between intention, capacity, and timing.

In a business context, readiness determines whether initiatives land, whether change is adopted, and whether effort leads to results.

Readiness is timing aligned with willingness and capacity.

Significance

My friend, a therapist, once said with a deep sigh, “Readiness is everything.” If a client isn’t ready, there’s not much he can do. We assume that if something makes sense, it should work. In reality, nothing works without readiness.

This is why readiness matters so much in coaching, therapy, and leadership. A ready person accelerates. Progress can be rapid, sometimes dramatic. Without readiness, even the best method feels ineffective. It is not a question of quality. It is a question of timing.

Before readiness, there is resistance, hesitation, and inconsistency. People say they want change, but do not follow through. Energy is still tied up elsewhere, in the past, in habits, fears, or competing priorities. The mind says “forward,” the system pulls back to what is familiar.

You cannot force readiness. You can prepare for it, invite it, support it, but not create it on demand. At a certain point, something shifts. Excuses fall away. The decision becomes obvious. Action becomes natural.

Readiness is also cumulative. People often need to encounter the same idea multiple times before it lands. What once felt distant suddenly becomes relevant and urgent. The same message, delivered at the right time, creates a breakthrough.

This is where humility comes in. Breakthroughs are not only the result of skill. They are the meeting point of readiness, know-how, and opportunity.

In my work, I treat readiness as a key condition.
When it is present, change becomes possible. When it is not, it is better to wait.
