Problem-Solving
Definition
Problem-solving is the process of identifying, understanding, and resolving obstacles that prevent progress or delivery. It involves analysis, decision-making, and the application of appropriate solutions.
In a business context, problem-solving drives improvement, innovation, and execution. It enables individuals and teams to move from friction to function, from confusion to clarity.
Problem solving is progress through obstacles.
Significance
Most problems are not solved at the level where they appear. What looks like an issue is often a symptom of something deeper. Without identifying the real cause, solutions tend to be temporary, repetitive, or ineffective.
It helps to distinguish between tasks, challenges, and problems. A client request is a task. You are meant to fulfill it. If it feels like a problem, the real issue may be overload or lack of capacity. An obstacle, on the other hand, is a disruption that blocks progress. A tree across the road is not the problem. The problem is that you need to get somewhere. The tree simply creates the need for a solution.
This is where creative thinking becomes essential. Problem-solving is not only about logic and analysis. It is about perspective. The ability to reframe a situation, see patterns, and consider alternatives that are not immediately obvious.
Creative problem-solving asks better questions. Instead of “How do we fix this?” it asks “Why is this happening?” or “Are we solving the right problem?” Often, redefining the problem changes the solution entirely.
In my work, problem-solving starts with diagnosis. Once the real issue is clearly named, solutions tend to emerge naturally. Strong alignment reduces problems in the first place, and when they do arise, they become easier to resolve.
Problem-solving is not just about fixing what is broken.
It is about seeing clearly enough to know what matters and find alternatives.
