Motivation
Definition
Motivation is the internal drive that leads a person to act. It determines the direction, intensity, and persistence of behavior.
In a business context, motivation is not something that can be externally imposed. It arises from a combination of personal values, perceived meaning, autonomy, and the expectation of progress. External factors can influence it, but they do not create it.
Motivation is not energy given. It is energy activated.
Significance
Motivation is widely misunderstood. We talk about “motivating people” as if it were something that can be injected from the outside. It cannot. External input can inspire or create a temporary boost, but whether someone takes action depends on what is already present within them.
There are two types of motivation: external and internal. External motivation relies on reward and punishment. It can drive short-term compliance, but it does not create real engagement. People will do what is asked, but rarely what is needed. Internal motivation, on the other hand, comes from meaning, autonomy, and the ability to make progress. It sustains itself.
In business, this creates a common mismatch. Companies design systems based on external pressure, then expect internally motivated behavior. That gap leads to disengagement. The problem is not the people. It is the environment.
Leadership’s role is not to motivate, but to create conditions where motivation can emerge. Clear direction, shared values, autonomy, and visible progress. When these are present, motivation becomes natural.
Motivation is not something you give to people. It is something you either enable, or suppress.
