Integrity

Definition

Integrity in a business context refers to the alignment and consistency between values, decisions, actions, and communication. It is the state in which all parts of a system work together coherently rather than in contradiction.

At an individual level, integrity means acting in accordance with one’s authentic values. At an organizational level, it means that leadership, teams, and strategy are aligned around a shared direction. When integrity is present, energy is focused and movement is efficient. When it is missing, effort becomes scattered, inconsistent, and ineffective.

Integrity is not about perfection. It is about coherence between what people sense, think, say and do.

Significance

To understand integrity, it helps to look at its opposite: disintegration.

A friend of mine once went to see a healer. She looked at him and said, “Oh my, you are all over the place. A piece of you is still at work, a piece at home, one piece is still standing behind that door. I’ll go make us some tea. In the meantime, why don’t you put yourself together.” It’s funny, but also painfully accurate.

We do this all the time. Individually, we split our attention, our energy, and our priorities. We wear masks and try to be different things in different contexts, often without realizing how fragmented we’ve become. And in organizations, this effect is multiplied. People pull in different directions, operate from different assumptions, and scatter their effort. This is where integrity becomes essential.

In my work, I look for the essence of who people and teams actually are. Not what they say they are, not what they think they should be, but what is consistently true beneath the surface. Once that is named, something shifts. Things become clearer. Decisions become easier.

It acts like a flag on a battlefield. No matter how chaotic things get, people know where to gather. They know what they stand for and where they are going. A good leader, in this sense, is not just a commander giving orders. They are the one carrying the flag, holding the direction steady so others can align with it.
