Insight
Definition
Insight is the ability to perceive underlying patterns, meanings, and causes that are not immediately visible. It goes beyond information or analysis. It identifies what actually matters.
In a business context, insight enables faster and more accurate decision-making. It helps distinguish between symptoms and root causes, noise and signal, surface-level issues and structural problems. Unlike knowledge, which accumulates, insight simplifies.
Insight is not about knowing more. It is about seeing more clearly.
Significance
When I was nineteen, my boss’s American wife referred to me as “bright.” It stopped me in my tracks. I had always had great academic results, but I never saw myself as particularly “smart,” not in the sharp, streetwise way I saw in others. But I could see through things.
Over time, through friendships with coaches, healers, and consultants, I noticed a pattern. The good ones were not necessarily the smartest in the room, but they were wise. They had insight. Their clients were often highly intelligent. What they needed from us was not more information, but clarity.
In my work, I often listen to long, complex stories. As I listen, I scan for the difference between ballast and kernels of truth. Between what is being said and what it actually means. Between conscious self-talk and subconscious motivation. When we touch that core, I sometimes get goosebumps. There is a sigh of relief, a palpable shift in the room.
Insight is not about collecting knowledge or even experience. Some of the wisest observations come from children or people unencumbered by education and expectations. It is the ability to discern. To recognize the essence of something without getting lost in detail.
To filter. To diagnose. To see in.
That is insight.
