Definition

Design is the intentional structuring and arrangement of elements to create function, clarity, and aesthetic coherence. It shapes how something works, how it is experienced, and how it is perceived.

In a business context, design influences products, services, communication, and environments. It connects structure with expression and determines how ideas are translated into form.

Design is structure made visible, usable, and, ideally, beautiful.

Significance

I am not a formally trained designer, but I understand design as a fundamental principle. To me, design is not a discipline. It is a way of thinking.

This translates into a wide range of applications. I design systems, workflows, brands, websites, interiors, floral arrangements, and book covers. Anything that requires structure, clarity, order, and a sense of pleasure.

The medium changes, the principle remains the same, blending functionality with aesthetics, message with beauty. And in many cases, I also implement the design in practice, building gardens and furniture, painting walls, baking my own wedding cake, crocheting, and sewing. Why leave the fun part to someone else?

At the core of this is my fascination with structure. I am drawn to understanding how things are built, how they function, and what holds them together. This applies to people, organizations, and natural systems alike. It is what led me to coaching and to creating frameworks such as Value Anatomy.

I also find inspiration in microstructures in nature. Snowflakes, stones, plants. The way complexity organizes itself into patterns. This interest led me to develop my scanography method and create detailed art prints from flowers, feathers, and other natural materials.

Design, in this sense, is not just about appearance. It is about coherence between form and function. When something is well designed, it feels right. It works, and it makes sense at the same time. The excess falls away. The composition is right. Colors and patterns are balanced. Something clicks.

This is also why I naturally gravitate toward working with artists, craftsmen, and designers. I understand their mindset and respect their process. Over time, this even led me into unexpected areas, such as writing for glassmaking companies, where the transformation of material itself becomes part of the design story.

I design websites for my own projects, including this one, and collaborate with graphic designers and web developers, often acting as a bridge between them and our clients. I speak their language.

Design is everywhere.
The question is whether it is intentional.
