Culture (Company Culture)

Definition

Corporate culture is the shared system of values, norms, behaviors, and expectations that shape how people work together inside an organization. It influences how decisions are made, how conflicts are handled, how people communicate, and how the company interacts with clients, partners, and society.

Corporate culture is expressed through everyday behavior rather than official statements. Policies, leadership style, incentives, and informal habits all contribute to shaping the culture of an organization.

In business, culture is often described as “how things are really done around here.”

Significance

Corporate culture is one of the most discussed and least understood aspects of business leadership. Many companies attempt to change it by announcing new values or launching motivational campaigns. In reality, culture changes much more slowly and through different mechanisms.

Organizational research consistently shows that culture is shaped primarily by leadership behavior, incentive structures, and everyday decision-making. Employees watch what leaders actually reward, tolerate, or punish. Those signals gradually define the real culture of the company.

Studies on organizational change suggest that meaningful cultural shifts typically take several years. John Kotter’s research on transformation projects famously estimated that large-scale organizational change often takes five to ten years to fully take hold. Other studies from consulting firms such as McKinsey show that sustainable cultural change requires consistent reinforcement through hiring practices, leadership development, incentives, and daily management routines.

In other words, culture does not change because someone writes a new mission statement. It changes because the system surrounding people changes. My part of this effort focuses on clarifying the authenticity of what is (bringing existing qualities to light and leaning into them) and what could be (creating a mission and vision people can actually believe). But, of course, that’s just the start.
