Consciousness (Conscious Choices…)
Definition
Consciousness is the ability to observe reality and oneself with awareness and to make deliberate choices rather than act purely from habit, impulse, or external pressure. In individuals, it appears as self-awareness and reflection. In organizations, it appears as clarity of purpose, responsibility for impact, and alignment between values and actions.
Internally, consciousness shapes how people communicate, collaborate, and make decisions. Externally, it increasingly shapes markets as well. A growing number of consumers consciously choose products, employers, and brands that align with their values.
Significance
My personal view is that consciousness is not something our brain produces, but something we participate in. We tap into it. Throughout history, people have called it many names: God, Source, universal intelligence. Interestingly, recent scientific research seems to be moving closer and closer to this ancient idea. The brain doesn’t appear to be the producer of awareness but the antenna.
From a practical perspective, consciousness becomes visible the moment people stop operating on autopilot. They begin asking better questions. What are we really doing here? Why does it matter? What do we stand for? To whom do we give our time, attention and money… and in exchange for what?
This shift is increasingly visible in society and in business. People pay more attention to how companies behave, how products are made, and whether actions match words. Consciousness does not guarantee perfect decisions, but it changes the criteria by which decisions are made.
