Coherence

Definition

Coherence is the state in which elements fit together logically, consistently, and meaningfully. It reflects harmony between parts that form a clear and unified whole.

In a business context, coherence connects identity, communication, behavior, and experience. It ensures that what a company says, does, and represents feels consistent and trustworthy.

Coherence is harmony with meaning.

Significance

Coherence is what makes things make sense. It is not just about consistency, but about harmony. When something is coherent, its parts resonate with each other. There are no contradictions, no mixed signals, no friction that does not belong. Everything fits.

This is where coherence differs from alignment. Alignment creates direction. Coherence creates harmony. Alignment is about putting elements into a line so that energy can move forward. It shows up in strategy, decisions, prioritization, and execution. Coherence is about tuning those elements so that the movement makes sense. It shows up in identity, communication, trust, and perception.

You can have alignment without coherence. This creates efficient nonsense. Things move fast, but something feels off. You can also have coherence without alignment. This creates beautiful confusion. Everything makes sense, but nothing moves. Of course, we need both.

In individuals, coherence appears as integrity. Thoughts, words, and actions align and resonate. Heart and brain move in sync, creating a clear internal signal. In organizations, it appears as clarity and trust. People understand what you stand for without needing explanation.

In my work, coherence is often the goal behind the goal. Once the underlying elements are harmonized, many problems disappear. Not because they were solved directly, but because they no longer belong in a coherent system.

Coherence does not require perfection.
It requires fine-tuning, a harmony that holds together.
