Coaching
Definition
Coaching is a structured developmental process in which a trained practitioner supports a client in clarifying goals, identifying obstacles, and discovering solutions through guided inquiry. In both business and life coaching, the primary method is questioning rather than advising. The coach facilitates reflection, helping clients arrive at their own conclusions and actionable insights. Coaching is typically future-oriented, solution-focused, and shorter-term than therapy, emphasizing responsibility, awareness, and measurable progress.
Significance
While my clients often refer to our work as coaching, the content of our sessions is different. My approach draws from two complementary traditions: transformation and empowerment.
In transformation-based work, growth happens through contained challenge. I may invite a client into a safe but demanding situation where they must actively apply themselves, then we reflect and extract insight from the experience. This approach is interactive, practical, and often faster, but it requires energy and commitment.
When that energy is low, empowerment becomes the wiser starting point. Instead of pushing through challenges or analyzing history, we deliberately build strength, stability, and momentum. As internal resources grow, clients regain the capacity to face their challenges, and small victories begin to compound.
Whether framed as one-on-one coaching sessions, small groups, workshops, scaled up to empower teams or transform companies, the work remains the same: deep, dynamic and hands-on.
