Change (Change Management)

Definition

Change is the process of moving from one state to another. It can range from gradual adjustments to fundamental shifts in direction, structure, or identity.

In a business context, change includes both incremental evolution and deeper transformation. Change management refers to the structured approach used to guide people and organizations through these shifts.

Change is movement over time.

Significance

Change is a broad term. It covers everything from small improvements to profound transformation. Not all change is the same.

At one end, change is gradual. It is evolution. Processes improve, systems adapt, and performance increases over time. This type of change can often be managed through planning, metrics, and structured implementation.

At the other end, change becomes transformation. It is not about improving what exists, but about rethinking it entirely. Identity, values, direction, and behavior shift. This type of change cannot be managed through spreadsheets alone. It requires a different kind of work.

This is where many organizations misjudge the situation. They approach transformation as if it were incremental change. They apply tools designed for optimization to problems that require redefinition. The result is resistance, confusion, and slow progress.

My background is in transformation. I have not only guided people through it, but also researched it and developed tools to make it more manageable. In my work with companies, I do not focus on the quantitative side of change management, such as spreadsheets, projections, or market analysis. That part can usually be handled internally or by specialists. I focus on the qualitative and human dimensions.

Values, perception, alignment, and coherence. But also team dialogue, brainstorming, relationships, presentations, training, and coaching. These elements determine whether change actually lands.

Because in the end, change is not implemented. It is adopted. People need to understand it, connect to it, and see themselves in it. Without that, even the best plans fail.

Most organizational “change” is not change at all.
It is transformation in disguise.
